Liberal, delicious Colombian sweet bread (EN-ES)

Today I am back here to share with you another tasting of a Colombian dessert that I recently met.

One of the friends we have made here in Colombia, a Venezuelan who has been living in this country for seven years now, brought us to the store a sweet treat to share with a cup of coffee.

This friend has a business right next to ours and, from time to time, we share a cup of coffee, while we talk about everything a little bit. Most of the time we do catharsis about our country and our mourning as migrants, the other times, we tell each other about our experiences in Bogota. Thus, between laughter and some tears, we spend some good moments of conversation in which fraternity unites us.

Hoy estoy de vuelta por aquí para compartir con ustedes otra degustación de un postre colombiano que conocí recientemente.

Uno de los amigos que hemos hecho aquí en Colombia, un venezolano que ya tiene siete años viviendo en este país, nos llevó al negocio un regalo dulce para compartir con una tacita de café.

Este amigo tiene un negocio justo al lado del nuestro y, de vez en cuando, compartimos un café, mientras hablamos de todo un poco. La mayoría de las veces hacemos catarsis por nuestro país y el duelo como migrantes, las otras, nos contamos nuestras experiencias en Bogotá. Así, entre risas y algunas lagrimitas, pasamos unos buenos ratos de conversas en las que la fraternidad nos une.

Through the bag that our friend put in my hands, I could see a kind of round red bread. When I took them out, I was surprised by the size and the intense color. To my surprise he told me: "They are liberal, try them! Without thinking too much, I took one, opened it in half to discover that it was stuffed and took a big bite.

The liberal is a Colombian sweet that is part of the Colombian bakery sweets. It is a kind of bread made of wheat flour, filled with arequipe, moistened with a preparation with strong red coloring and coated with sugar, which gives it texture and shine.

These breads are also known as peras or yoyos rojos, and there is a story behind their creation. According to what I was checking online, I found a Tiktok in which they explain that it is a homage to the famous Colombian General Rafael Uribe Uribe, who belonged to the liberal politics of the country. Thus, the bakers created this red candy to expose their political affiliation.

A través de la bolsa que nuestro amigo puso en mis manos, se dejaba ver una especie de pan redondo de color rojo. Al sacarlos, me sorprendió el tamaño y el color intenso. Ante mi sorpresa me dijo: ¡Son liberales! ¡Pruébelos! Sin pensarlo mucho, tomé uno, lo abrí por la mitad para descubrir que estaba relleno y le di un gran mordisco.

El liberal es un dulce colombiano que forma parte de la dulcería de panadería colombiana. Es una especie de pan hecho de harina de trigo, relleno con arequipe, humedecido con una preparación con colorante rojo bien fuerte y recubierto de azúcar, la cual le aporta textura y brillo.

Estos panes se conocen también como peras o yoyos rojos, y detrás de su creación hay una historia. Según lo que estuve revisando por internet, encontré un Tiktok en el que explican que es un homenaje al célebre General colombiano Rafael Uribe Uribe, quien pertenecía a la política liberal del país. Así, los panaderos crearon este dulce de color rojo para dejar expuesta su filiación política.

This sweet is a spongy bread with arequipe filling that gives it a touch of softness and creaminess that makes it a real delicacy for an afternoon snack. You have to be very careful when eating it because everything can stain, due to the coloring it has on the surface. The intense red color, from the fingers to the lips, is a telltale sign that we have been eating liberals, so be careful!

For now, I say goodbye and continue in my plan to taste much more of Colombian gastronomy.

Este dulce es un pancito esponjoso con relleno de arequipe que le da un toque de suavidad y cremosidad que lo convierte en un verdadero manjar para una merienda de tarde. Hay que tener mucho cuidado cuando lo estemos consumiendo porque todo se puede manchar, debido al colorante que tiene en la superficie. El color rojo intenso, desde los dedos hasta los labios, es un delator de que estuvimos comiendo liberales. ¡Así que cuidado!

Por ahora, me despido y sigo en mi plan de degustar mucho más de la gastronomía colombiana.
