Larry Is Alive 17 April 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for wednesday, the 17th day of April, 2024. Matches continue today in the UEFA organized football competitions. Tonight was the UEFA Europa League and the Conference League matches. Many had expected Liverpool to pull off some sort of miracle by overturning a 3 goal deficit and beat Atalanta in Italy. Yes, Liverpool won (1-0) but that was not good enough to secure them a semi final slot as the game ended (1-3) on aggregate.

In the other match of the night, another English side WestHam United playing at home drew (1-1) with Bayer Leverkusen. That too was not good enough as the game ended (1-3) on aggregate.

The only rare hope, as always was Aston Villa who plays in the Conference League. They lost to Lille in France (2-1) but the game was tied on aggregate (3-3) and Villa won (4-3) on penalties.

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from Zimbabwe. He finds out that on this day in 1980, Zimbabwe gained independence from the United Kingdom. Happy independence anniversary to them.

From Zimbabwe, Larry goes to the world of Hockey. He finds out that on this day in 1999 Wayne Gretzky, a Canadian ice hockey player who is widely regarded as one of the game's best players, played his final NHL game.

From the world of Hockey, Larry goes to the Vatican City. He finds out that on this day in 1506, the first stone of the new St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City was laid by Pope Julius II.

From the Vatican City, Larry goes to Germany. He finds out that on this day in 1955, Albert Einstein was a German-born scientist who formulated the special and general theories of relativity and received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his explanation of the photoelectric phenomenon, died in Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A.

From Germany, Larry goes to the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1906, an earthquake resulting from slippage along the San Andreas Fault rocked San Francisco.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from Ireland. He finds out that on this day in Michael D. Higgins, an Irish politician, human rights activist, university lecturer, and poet who has served as President of Ireland since 2011, was born in Limerick, County Limerick, Ireland.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
