Larry Is Alive #134 August 30, 2023: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone. Welcome to my midweek hunt for Larry the postman. Gentlemen, we just have a day to say goodbye to August 2023. Its been a jolly ride really. But it apears that democray and democratic institutions are on trial lately in Africa. Few weeks ago, the military boys struck in Niger Republic and swept away the President and all the politically elected officials were forcefully removed from office. The ECOWAS chairman who incidentally is the current Nigeria's president was tilting towards using military force to push away the juntas and return the democratically elected President back to power. There were hues and cries across Nigeria over the said planned military action.

As if that one was not enough, the central African country of Gabon is now the latest. The "Bongo" dynasty has been brought to an end by a military coup yesterday. Ali Bongo Ondimba, the son of Omar Bongo, who succeeded his late father in 2009 was overthrown by the juntas after a disputed presidential election which would have seen him return to power for the third time running having been elected first in 2009 following the death of his father Omar Bongo, reelected in 2016 and then in 2023. But that was not meant to be! It is now history. Larry sighs deeply and then turns his attention to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from the Soviet Union. He finds out that on this day in 1918, Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin [whose original name was Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov] was shot twice in a botched assassination attempt.

From the Soviet Union, Larry moves to Afghanistan. He finds out that on this day in 2021, after a tumultuous withdrawal, the final US forces left Afghanistan, nearly seven years after the war in that country had officially ended.

From Afghanistan, Larry moves over to the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1983, Guion S. Bluford, Jr., a U.S. astronaut, became the first African American to travel to space while serving as a mission specialist on the shuttle orbiter Challenger. He subsequently traveled on three further missions.

From the USA, Larry moves over to Belarus. He finds out that on this day in 1954, Alexander Lukashenko, a Belarusian politician who advocated communist ideology and was elected president of the country in 1994 was born in Kopys, Vitebsk oblast, Belorussia, U.S.S.R. [now in Belarus].

From Belarus, Larry moves over to the Netherlands. He finds out that on this day in 1883, Theo van Doesburg, a Dutch painter, decorator, poet, and art theorist who led the De Stijl movement was born in Utrecht, Netherlands.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from the Islamic Republic of Iran. He finds out that on this day in 1981, Mohammad Ali Rajaʾi, the Iranian politician who was prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran from 1980 to 1981 died in Tehrān.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
