Larry Is Alive #114 August 1, 2023 Special Edition: HPUD For August 2023

Hello everyone. Welcome to the first day of the month of August 2023. This is a special edition of the Larry Is Alive hunt as I will be incorporating the HPUD activity at the end of the post. Gentlemen, more teams have been sent home in the ongoing Women's World Cup 2023 co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Four matches were played today and there were two heavy defeats I must say. China who faced England were pumelled (6-1) by the English ladies. That was the first heavy defeat of the day. Denmark humbled Haiti (2-1), and the high profile game between the reigning champions USA and Portugal ended goalless (0-0). Finally the second heavy defeat was recorded in the match between Vietnam vs the Netherlands wherein the Dutch mauled them (7-0). By those results, China, Haiti, Portugal and Vietnam got eliminated from the competition.

Tomorrow, Jamaica will face Brazil, with Panama squaring up against France, Argentina plays the Sweden and Italy will face South Africa. Let's wait and see how those matches will pan out as more teams will still exit the competition come tomorrow. Larry then turns his attention to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from the Saudi Arabia. He finds out that on this day in 2005, Fahd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl Saʿūd [Fahd], who became King of Saudi Arabia in 1982, died on this day in Riyadh at the age of 82. He was succeeded by his half brother Abd Allah.

From Saudi Arabia, Larry moves over to the world of sports, precisely boxing. He finds out that on this day in 1987, Mike Tyson, an American boxer, defeated Tony Tucker and was unanimously crowned heavyweight champion by all three sanctioning bodies (World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association, and International Boxing Federation).

From boxing, Larry moves into the world of music and entertainment generally. He finds out that on this day in 1981, MTV, a cable television network, had its debut with the transmission of the Buggles' music video for Video Killed the Radio Star.

From the world of entertainment, Larry goes to Iceland. He finds out that on this day in 1980, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, an Icelandic teacher and politician, was elected president of Iceland. She was the first woman in the world to be elected head of state in a national election.

Larry moves to Poland as he finds out that on this day in 1944, the Warsaw Uprising began when the Polish underground attempted to overthrow the German army and seize control of the city before it was seized by the invading Soviet army; the Poles were forced to surrender in October after running out of supplies.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in history from the world of Olympics. He finds out that on this day in 1936, the Summer Olympics began in Berlin, and Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party's aspirations to establish the superiority of the "Aryan race" were thwarted by the performance of African American competitors, particularly Jesse Owens.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry picks up some of his parcels and heads out to begin his deliveries.
