Nowadays, normal marriage is described as something quite outdated and conservative. As someone who is married and has also lived alone and in various relationships for a long time, I can only disagree. In my experience, it's better today. But it depends on the choice of partner. Ok, I'm not a fan of marriages where the partners are chosen by others, where they don't know each other, even if there aren't so many break-ups in these countries. Of course, you have the choice between marriage and separation with the risk of getting stoned (not the Western meaning).

Ich kenne meine Frau seit mehr als 20 Jahren, aber mit ihr bin ich erst seit 10 Jahren zusammen. Wir haben uns immer gut verstanden, aber es hat lange gedauert, bis ich sie eingeladen habe. Nicht weil ich schüchtern bin, sondern weil sie in einer anderen Beziehung war und ich meine eigene hatte.
Ich bin auch sehr wählerisch, und wenn mir etwas nicht gefällt, ziehe ich weiter. Und das ist mit dem Alter auch schlimmer geworden. Ich mag schöne Frauen, die auf sich selbst aufpassen. Ohne zu übertreiben, aber sie sollten immer gepflegt aus dem Haus gehen. Ja, auch wenn es schlimm klingt, ich mag es, wenn mein Partner schön ist. Es ist schlecht, wenn man sich nicht zueinander hingezogen fühlt.
Es ist sehr wichtig, dass sie klug ist und weiß, wann und was sie sagen muss. Aber das Wichtigste ist, einander zu unterstützen und zu verstehen. Ohne das gibt es kein Vertrauen und keine Ehe.

Well, for me, and this is only under my perspective, two persons that love each other and raise kids. That in a most shallow explanation.
