Intellectual property and why it matters

Eight years ago, my life looked very different. Back then, I was working in research and also registered a few patents. Not all of them went through, because our lawyer was at the beginning of his career. Some of the patents were filed by the company at the time just to show how strong they were in inventions, some just to stop the competition's research, and very few to utilise them.
I think it's good that there is some kind of protection against theft. Yes, because if you invent something, it's property, like a house, car or clothes. Of course, there is always a question of ethics and morality. If you invent a drug that saves the lives of many people, but make it so expensive that most people can't afford it, then that's actually a shame for the invention. Of course, it has to cover the costs and a little more, but it also has to be ethically justifiable.
Not only inventions, but also art, is protected. Everything that a person creates, unless he does it for someone else and is paid for it, is his property. I am a strict advocate of ownership and personal achievement. The people who created something, who had that certain something, and who used it.
As I said, it has to be ethical. With art you can demand what you want, art is a matter of taste, unlike medicines. My patents are more for technical things that mostly save companies money by using special parts in certain processes. This can be done differently and it doesn't hurt anyone if these patents are blocked. They just make production easier and costs more efficient.

Vor acht Jahren sah mein Leben noch ganz anders aus. Damals habe ich in der Forschung gearbeitet und auch einige Patente angemeldet. Nicht alle sind durchgegangen, denn unser Anwalt war am Anfang seiner Karriere. Einige der Patente wurden von der damaligen Firma nur angemeldet, um zu zeigen, wie stark sie in Erfindungen waren, einige nur, um die Forschung der Konkurrenz zu stoppen, und nur sehr wenige, um sie zu nutzen.
Ich finde es gut, dass es irgendwie ein Schutz gegen Diebstahl gibt. Ja, weil wenn man was erfindet, ist es ein Eigentum, wie ein Haus, Auto oder Kleidung. Klar, es gibt immer eine Frage der Ethik und der Moral. Wenn man ein Medikament erfindet, das vielen Menschen das Leben rettet, es aber so teuer macht, dass es sich die meisten Menschen nicht leisten können, dann ist das eigentlich schade um die Erfindung. Natürlich muss es kostendeckend sein und ein bisschen mehr, aber es muss auch ethisch vertretbar sein.
Nicht nur Erfindungen, sondern auch Kunst ist geschützt. Alles, was ein Mensch schafft, wenn er es nicht für einen anderen tut und dafür bezahlt wird, ist sein Eigentum. Ich bin ein strikter Verfechter des Eigentums und der eigenen Leistung. Die Leute, die etwas geschaffen haben, die das gewisse Etwas hatten, und es auch benutzt haben.
Wie gesagt, es muss ethisch sein. Bei Kunst kann man verlangen, was man will, Kunst ist Geschmackssache, im Gegensatz zu Medikamenten. Meine Patente sind eher für technische Dinge, die meistens Unternehmen Geld sparen, indem sie spezielle Teile in bestimmten Prozessen verwenden. Das kann man auch anders machen und es schadet niemandem, wenn diese Patente blockiert werden. Sie machen nur die Produktion einfacher und die Kosten effizienter.
