Learn with Me: Content Marketing

I used to say "I suck at marketing," but I wasn't doing anything about it. I kept building projects like my Digital Funding Tokens and offering myself For Hire making Art for HBD and as expected, a few people saw them, and fewer have bought in. I didn't know where to start with promoting these projects.

Today, I decided to learn something about marketing. I chose HubSpot Academy as I stumbled upon it a few days ago, and found it offers many Free Courses. I chose the Content Marketing Course because I already consider myself a Content Creator.

Content Marketing

Today, I finished the first out of 12 lessons from the course. It's titled "The Power of Storytelling." I got out of the lesson with a few key points:

  • 💡The Golden Circle: What you do isn't as important as why you do it!
  • 💬 Focus on the Emotion: Building a connection with your audience.
    • 💭 The audience remembers emotions more than facts.
  • 🎭 Elements of Storytelling: Characters, conflict, and resolution.
  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Choosing Characters: In content marketing stories, characters should resonate with the audience, addressing their wants and needs.
    • The main character of the story could be in First Person (me,) Second Person, (the audience,) or Third Person (a he or she.)
  • 🥅 Conflict: The driving factor of the story and it should always teach a lesson.
  • 🏞️ The resolution: The story should have a closure and it should always call the audience to action.
  • 🌟 Consistency and Authenticity: "Tell the Truth, but make it Fascinating."

You might've noticed that I tried to apply this lesson in this article:

  • The main character the story follows is me (first person) and the secondary character is you, the reader, (second person.)
  • The conflict is trying to learn as much as I can from the market, and helping you learn with me along the way.
  • The resolution: By the end of this, I'd have solidified what I learned in my mind, and you'd have learned something with me.

In conclusion, the story should explain the "Why?" of the brand by introducing the conflict. Have a relatable character be the audience's link with the brand, and the resolution should call the reader to action, whether to buy something, or share the content.

Thoughts After the Lesson

During the lesson, I realized I didn't know how to determine my Buyer Persona (my Ideal customer.) That's probably the reason I don't know how to market my projects.

Another point I'm struggling with is finding the conflict to write a story around. This may be because I don't have the "Persona" materialized in my mind. I tried to understand this article so I could write its conflict above.

This might sound weird coming from someone who writes stories but I usually don't "find" the conflict. It emerges organically as I write as my characters do things as they see fit. So, I have trouble finding a conflict to write about when the characters are vague in my mind.

At the moment, I'm thinking about the Buyer Persona for each of my projects. I'm not sure what to choose yet, I might need to go through, some trial and error, but at least I have a starting line to begin from now.

Hope You Learned Something!

The course I'm taking is Hubspot's Content Marketing Course, which you can find via this link. I hope to make this a recurring series in which I explain what I learned and how you can learn with me. What do you think?
