Unforgettable

“Please, if so, you have to be strong and don't think of what had happened. Remove all that has happened off your mind so that it will not cause something else to your health", my husband said.
"I will try, but it is not easy", I replied..

On a normal basis, I always send money through P.O.S. to customers because that is what I have been doing without mistakes. For some reason, I was not ready to do this business as it is very risky, but somehow, my husband had to push me to do it. I have heard of serious cases of customers losing money and some network issues that may cause fights between customers and the machine owners. These are the major reasons why I was not ready to do the business, but my husband had to force me to do it, and he even went to the extent of buying a P.O.S. for me.

For the first month, money started flowing in, which made me happy. I was super excited and was ready to continue with this business. It was a mouthwatering business, which people have been gaining from. I only thanked my husband for opening my eyes to this business, as it has added enough to my pockets.

Months later, someone came to my shop to make a transaction. I could not look at him just to recognize his face and instead proceeded to make the transaction. He dropped the sum of $20,000 just to make a deposit in his bank account. Out of excitement and with the tangible amount of money he was going to add, I entered five zeros instead of four zeros. I did not know what I had done but was just excited to have made that transaction for a total return of 10% of what he deposited.

That day was a great day for me. When I got home, I was just going through my phone messages, as I don't like deleting messages from my phone, especially bank statements. The first message I saw was: “Your account has been debited with $200,000.”. I wiped my face just to be sure of what I saw. It was reality, and I was angered and shouted at once. My husband had to ask what had happened. I was weeping seriously, and with tears rolling down my face, my husband had to console me despite the fact that I had not told him what had happened.

After two minutes of weeping, my husband said I should transfer money to one of his friends. This aggravated the issue even more. “Was it because I did not tell you what had happened?” I said this to my husband.

“I saw the way you were weeping, and I could not talk again as you did not tell me," he said.

“I mistakenly transferred $200,000 instead of $20,000,”, I opened up to him.

“What a mistake!” he responded.

As we were deliberating on the issue, I received a knock at the door. My daughter had to open the door. It was an electricity bill a vendor brought to me. With annoyance, I tore the bill and threw it at the vendor. He was surprised, as this had not happened before. He has been the one delivering bills to us, but now he can't explain my nature or the way I treated him. It was just as if the whole incident was planned.

My husband tried to console me but the more he do, the more aggravated I was.

It's not easy to lose that kind of tangible amount at once. Crying was not the only option, but to shout at anyone who came my way.

I tried to trace the boy when it was the following money, but I was not able to take note of his face. Besides, he sent it to someone else.

Ah, the person he sent it to, must have thank his stars and didn't even mention it to him.

Is it not possible to go to the bank and report such issues and get a lawyer to get a court order for the money to be returned?

Please, ask around, a lawyer will definitely know what to do especially if you still have the account details of the person.

What? Sorry for the loss, 200k is too huge. Why didn't you report the matter to the bank? POS business is very good but it's also very risky.

Readers can imagine making the same kind of error. You describe well the sinking feeling you felt when you realized your error. So much money lost in pursuit of a 10% profit. This is entirely believable, as told, because it does not end well for you. In life, usually a circumstance such as this does not end well. The person to whom you transferred the money will take the win and not look back.

Thank you for sharing this story with us, @abigail04

I'm still trying to process the emotional rollercoaster you went through after that fateful mistake.

But I can't help but wonder what would have happened if you had just double checked that transaction.

The experience has taught you a valuable lesson in attention to details and the importance of staying calm under pressure.
