Fulía

The celebration of the religious festival of the Cross of May has transcended in Venezuela for a long time, its exclusive religious character, to become a tradition that speaks a lot about the idiosyncrasy of our people. People attend this celebration not only out of devotion, but also because of its traditional and popular character. For some musicians, like myself, we enjoy integrating and participating in it.

In the town of El Hatillo, where I live, people gather from the night before to start singing a rhythm called fulía, which is accompanied by small drums specific to this genre, as well as maracas, cuatro (a traditional Venezuelan instrument), and voices.

Before starting a song, one of the decimistas (who improvise verses in ten-line stanzas) dedicates a poem to the cross, the participants, or any topic related to the event. At the end of their verses (sometimes several improvisers take turns), they announce "golpe y tambor" (beat and drum), and the song begins.

The verses are often improvised or specially prepared for the occasion. That is my case. I wrote the ten-line stanza that I recite at the beginning, and I also thought of the verses specifically for this participation in the 10th week of the Vibes Web3 Music Competition.

La celebración de la fiesta religiosa de la Cruz de Mayo, ha trascendido en Venezuela, desde hace mucho tiempo, su exclusivo carácter religiosos, para convertirse en una tradición que habla mucho de la idiosincrasia de nuestro pueblo. El pueblo asiste a esta celebración ya no solo por devoción, sino por su carácter popular tradicional y para algunos músicos, como es mi caso, nos gusta integrarnos y participar.

En el pueblo de El Hatillo, donde yo vivo, se convoca desde la noche anterior para empezar los cantos, un ritmo llamado fulía que se acompaña de unos tambores pequeños, específicos de ese género, acompañado de maracas, cuatro y voces.

Antes de empezar una canción, alguno de los decimistas (que improvisan versos en décimas), le dedica un poema a la cruz, a los participantes o a cualquier tema que se vincule a los presentes. Al final sus versos (a veces se alternan varios improvisadores), se anuncia "golpe y tambor" y empieza la canción.

Los versos son, en muchos casos, improvisados también o preparados especialmente para la ocasión. Tal es mi caso. Yo escribí la décima que recito al inicio y los versos los pensé, también, para esta participación en la semana 10, del Vibes Web3 Music Competition.
