Larry Is Alive 10 May 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for friday, the 10th day of May, 2024. Bayer Leverkusen set a new European unbeaten streak of 49 games with a late draw against Roma to advance to the Europa League final. Kudos to them.

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from South Africa. He finds out that on this day in 1994, Nelson Mandela, whose efforts to eliminate apartheid landed him in jail (1962-90) and earned him a share of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (with F.W. de Klerk), took office as president of South Africa.

From South Africa, Larry goes to the USA.
He finds out that on this day in 2002, Robert Hanssen, an American FBI agent, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to espionage for Moscow. He was one of the Soviet Union's and Russia's most valuable double agents, as well as the most damaging spy ever to penetrate the FBI.

From the USA, Larry goes to thr events of the WWII. He finds out that on this day in 1940, Germany invaded Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands during WWII.

From thr events of WWII, Larry goes to England. He finds out that on this day in 1940, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain resigned after losing the backing of many Conservatives in the House of Commons, and Winston Churchill succeeded him.

From England, Larry goes to France. He finds out that on this day in 1774, Louis XVI ascended to the French throne, and his wife, Marie-Antoinette, became queen consort; nevertheless, they were both murdered during the French Revolution.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from Philippines. He finds out that on this day in 1897, Andres Bonifacio, a Philippine patriot who founded and led the nationalist Katipunan society, provoked the August 1896 insurrection against the Spanish.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
